What is Elmiron?

Elmiron, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, is a prescription medication used to treat interstitial cystitis, which is often referred to as known as painful bladder syndrome. This disorder most frequently affects women and can cause chronic pelvic pain and the sensation of needing to go to the bathroom more often.

Recently, ophthalmologists and researchers at the Emory Eye Center noted a unique pigmentary maculopathy associated with long term exposure to Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium). Pigmentary maculopathy is a disorder that affects the macula, or the central portion of the retina, which is the light-sensitive portion of the eye. Those findings led ophthalmologists to further examine the records of patients who had taken the drug over the course of several years. Of the patients they interviewed, close to 25% showed evidence of retinal damage.

Problems With Elmiron

These findings have led researchers to recommend eye exams to monitor changes in the retina, which left untreated, may cause blindness.  Symptoms may include:

  • Dimming of vision
  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Defects in peripheral vision
  • Vision loss
