Allergan Biocell Breast Implant Recall

On July 24, the FDA announced it requested Allergan to remove certain textured surface implants from the US market. The FDA cautioned that the available data shows the risk of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) with Allergan implants is six times higher compared to textured implants from other manufacturers.   In response to the FDA’s request, Allergan issued a worldwide recall of their Biocell textured breast implants.

According to the FDA Safety Communication, “The FDA’s analysis was attributed to a new worldwide reported total of 573 unique BIA-ALCL cases including 33 patient deaths.”  Allergan’s textured breast implant BIA-AICL recall includes the following implants:

  • Allergan Natrelle Saline-Filled Breast Implants
  • Allergan Natrelle Silicone-Filled Textured Breast Implants
  • Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone Filled Breast Implants

Additional information about the exact style names included in the recall and the FDA’s recommendation for women with a recalled implant can be found on the FDA’s Safety Communication.

Symptoms of BIA-ALCL:

Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL, is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Often it is found in the scar tissue surrounding the implant. If not treated quickly, it can be serious and lead to death. Symptoms that have been reportedly associated with BIA-ALCL include:

  • Persistent swelling or pain in the area of the implant.
  • Breast lump or lumps.
  • Fluid buildup.
  • Hardening of or mass around the implants.

If you are having any of these symptoms or other complications with your implants, you should contact your doctor to discuss your condition.
