What is Paraquat?
Paraquat is one of the most popular chemical herbicides used to control overgrown vegetation and weeds. Chemical herbicides are more commonly referred to as “weed killers.” While Paraquat is widely used in the US, it is reportedly banned in 32 countries because of its high toxicity. Herbicide products that contain Paraquat include Gramoxone, Firestorm, Helmquat, and Parazone.
Is Paraquat Toxic?
Paraquat is known to be an effective weed killer, but it is also a toxic chemical with serious health risks. Even a small amount ingested or inhaled may be fatal. In 2017, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined certain risk measures were necessary for pesticide products containing Paraquat to meet the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), including:
- Label changes emphasizing Paraquat toxicity and supplemental warning materials
- Targeted training materials for Paraquat users
- Closed-system packaging for all non-bulk (less than 120 gallon) end use product containers of Paraquat
- Restricting the use of all Paraquat products to certified applicators only
Does Paraquat cause Parkinson’s Disease?
Paraquat lawsuits allege that Paraquat can interfere with dopaminergic neurons in the brain by creating oxidative stress. Scientists have generally concluded that oxidative stress is a major risk factor in the cause of Parkinson’s disease. Multiple epidemiological studies have found that occupational exposure to Paraquat, like the type of exposure a farmer using Paraquat would expect, more than doubles the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.
