What is this about?

If your child used Kik, a messaging app marketed as “fun, safe, and genuine,” you may not know that the app reportedly let users, including kids, sign up and message strangers anonymously, without a phone number, email, or robust age verification. Despite this, Kik advertised itself as safe for young users.

State regulators have taken notice. The Nevada Attorney General filed a lawsuit accusing Kik of creating a haven for child predators through its lack of safeguards, and the Connecticut Attorney General opened an investigation describing the app as having “no meaningful age verification or barriers or protections.”

If you’re a parent or legal guardian in California: before you or your child downloaded or used Kik, did you look at Kik’s website or other materials from the company suggesting it was safe? If so, and you or your child later spent money on the app — like paying for ad-free access — and you still have proof of that purchase (a digital or email receipt works), you may have a claim for compensation.

You don’t need to show that your child was personally contacted or targeted by a predator on Kik to qualify. This case is about Kik’s safety claims and the money families spent relying on them. That said, if your child did have a troubling experience on the app, we’d still like to confidentially hear from you about that experience.

We’re looking into these claims and want to hear from families who fit this description.

What can I do?

You likely qualify if:

  • You are a parent and/or legal guardian in California;
  • Prior to downloading or using Kik, you or your child reviewed the Kik website or any representation from Kik that it was a safe app;
  • You or your child spent any money on Kik, such as purchasing ad-free access, and you have proof of this (such as a digital/email receipt)

Our case does not require that your child or teen have been personally victimized on Kik, such as by being targeted by predators, being exposed to inappropriate content, or otherwise. However, if this did occur, we ask that you share that experience with our team, along with any evidence of things you did to try to help, such as any medical treatments, counselling, school interactions, or similar.
